How To Air Condition Apartments in One The Elephant

One The Elephant is a key development in the Elephant and Castle regeneration area. It boasts impressive energy efficiency—30% above what current planning regulations demand. Despite this, many owners experience excessive warmth in their apartments during winter. The heat gain was primarily due to the solar gain from the extensive glass surfaces. Consequently, numerous residents sought air conditioning options to address this issue. However, strict development restrictions prohibit using traditional external condenser boxes and any penetrations to the building’s exterior. Therefore, the only viable solution is the Cool You fully internal A-rated energy-efficient DC inverter air-conditioning system.

Cool You has successfully installed air conditioning in several apartments within One The Elephant. This case study showcases three distinct projects, illustrating typical installations by Cool You.

    Project One: One-Bedroom Apartment

In a one-bedroom unit, we positioned the internal condenser within the utility cupboard next to the spacious open-plan living area. We installed a quiet DC inverter high-wall room unit to enhance comfort on an adjacent wall. This cleverly conceals all pipework for a streamlined look.

    For this project, we installed:
A 1 x 7kW DC inverter water-cooled condenser serves a 1 x 7kW DC Inverter high-wall unit in the open-plan living area. This also provides supplementary cooling to secondary areas.

    Project Two: Two-Bedroom Apartment

This project involved a comprehensive modification of a two-bedroom apartment. To maximise cooling efficiency, we connected two condensers to concealed quiet DC inverter ducted room units in the ceiling void, effectively hiding all components. Notably, one system cooled the main open-plan living area and the second bedroom/study through a specially designed plenum. Another system ensured dedicated cooling for the main bedroom. Moreover, custom-made linear grilles, nicely plastered in, offered a flush finish.

    For this project, we installed:
A 7kW DC inverter water-cooled condenser for the open-plan living area and bedroom 2, utilising a 7kW DC Inverter concealed ducted unit. A 3.5kW DC inverter water-cooled condenser for the main bedroom, using a 3.5kW DC inverter concealed ducted unit.

    Project Three: Three-Bedroom Apartment

In a three-bedroom unit, we utilised a triple multi-split DC water-cooled internal condenser to support quiet DC inverter high-wall units in all three bedrooms. Additionally, a second condenser managed cooling for the expansive open-plan living area, with a high-wall room unit fitted on an adjoining wall. Our technical team efficiently connected the refrigerant pipework between the condensers and the room units through the ceiling void, keeping everything concealed.

    For this project, we installed:
A 7kW triple multi-split DC inverter water-cooled condenser servicing all three bedrooms with 3.5kW DC Inverter high-wall units each. A 5.3kW DC Inverter water-cooled condenser for the open-plan living area, paired with a 5.3kW DC Inverter high-wall unit.

Throughout the installations of projects one and three, we ensured minimal disruption to the existing decor. During project two, our technical team collaborated closely with the client’s contractors throughout the refurbishment. Fitting our air conditioning systems in these apartments required no planning permission.
