How To Air Condition Apartments in One The Elephant, a landmark apartment building at the Elephant and Castle.

A case study on the installation of our water-cooled fully internal air conditioning systems

One the Elephant is a cornerstone development of the Elephant and Castle regeneration area. One The Elephant apartment building is incredibly energy efficient (30% more than current planning regulations require). However, owners find their apartments very warm even during the colder winter. This heat build-up is also due to solar gain from the large glass area in each apartment.

To remedy the heat build-up, many owners wanted air conditioning. Development restrictions have banned the use of traditional external condenser boxes, and no penetrations are allowed to the outside.

The only solution available to air-condition apartments in this building is our fully internal A** rated energy efficient DC inverter internal condenser air-conditioning system.

Cool You have installed air-conditioning in many apartments within One The Elephant. With this case study, we have highlighted three projects within the building. Each gives a broad outline of typical installations carried out by Cool You.

The three projects are a combination of 2 and 3-bedroom apartments. The utility cupboard housed our water-cooled condensers in each case above the washing machine. A custom-made cradle system holds the condensers, saving space while allowing ease of maintenance.

Project one – a one-bedroom apartment in One The Elephant:

The internal condenser located within the utility cupboard was adjacent to the large open plan living area and the quiet DC inverter high wall room unit was fitted to an adjacent wall, allowing all pipework to be hidden.

For this project, we installed:
1 x 7kW DC Inverter water-cooled condenser
This served:
Open Plan Living Area – with supplementary cooling to the secondary zones.
1x 7kW DC Inverter cooling high wall unit

Project two – a two-bedroom apartment in One The Elephant:

Which was part of an extensive modification of the apartment. The two condensers were connected to concealed quiet DC inverter ducted room units using the ceiling void, allowing everything to be hidden. One system provided cooling for the main open plan living area, and using a specially designed plenum, the second bedroom/study could be cooled too. The other system provided dedicated cooling for the master bedroom. We provided custom-made linear grilles plastered in to leave a completely flush finish.

For this project, we installed:
1 x 7kW DC Inverter water-cooled condenser
This served:
Open Plan Living Area / Bedroom 2: 1x 7kW DC Inverter concealed ducted unit

1 x 3.5kW DC Inverter water-cooled condenser
This served:
Master Bedroom: 1x 3.5kW DC Inverter concealed ducted unit

Project three:

A three-bedroom apartment. A triple multi-split DC inverter water cooled internal condenser served quiet DC inverter high wall room units in all three bedrooms. A second condenser was adjacent to the large open plan living area, and the quiet DC inverter high wall room unit was fitted to an adjacent wall. Our technical team connected the refrigerant pipework between the condensers and the room unit using the ceiling void, enabling all the pipework to be concealed.

For this project, we installed:
1 x 7kW triple multi-split DC Inverter water-cooled condenser
This served:
Bedrooms 1, 2 and 3, each with a 3.5kW DC Inverter high wall units

1x 5.3kW DC Inverter water-cooled condenser
This served:
Open Plan Living Area: 1x 5.3kW DC Inverter high wall unit

Throughout the installations of projects one and three, there was minimal disruption to the existing decoration. With project two, our technical team worked alongside the client’s contractors during the refurbishment.

No planning permission was required to fit our air conditioning system in these apartments.
